The Lord’s Promise of MercyMatthew 5:7 |
Mercy is like a cool rain on a parched day. It is refreshing, soothing and meets needs in us that only mercy can meet. We, on the whole, love to receive mercy. Interesting thing. We don't really love giving mercy. Do you? When you are hurt by someone, when someone does an act that angers you, and the key ingredient, that person does not deserve mercy . . . do you feel like issuing mercy? First let us look at the term, mercy: Mercy is compassion or relief given to an undeserving recipient This is a simple working definition. Mercy also implies that it is given by the one who has power in a situation, as in the case of a ruler or a judge. But this works around the simple parts of life, also. A husband, when wronged by a wife, now has some power, if the wife is penitent. The same among friends, siblings, work-place relations. So, it may be that we really enjoy receiving mercy, but not so much giving it out. Well, JESUS set the example, and it is always vital for us to look back to HIM for inspiration. When we were yet sinners, HE died for us, the supreme act of Mercy! Something to think about as we continue to study mercy. |
